Much of the land owned by the Irwin family has been developed into Australia Zoo. Steve Irwin's father purchased the land, more than a hundred acres, many years ago. The Australian and Queensland governments have jointly built a major highway parallel to the Sunshine Coast, north to south. This has really put the Irwin property, Australia Zoo, on the tourist route. Steve Irwin's skill, knowledge and personality have made him world famous. His family - wife Terri, daughter Bindi and son Robert have continued his work in conserving wildlife.
The original small animal park has been redeveloped and made much larger. It has been called Australia Zoo only in recent years. I would say about a third of visitors come from the United States. It is always crowded there now. I believe there are plans on the drawing board to build a motel and convention centre beside Australia Zoo
Crocodiles are quite prevalent in northern Queensland. In some instances they move onto beaches and into drains. Queensland Parks and Wildlife officers monitor the situation and remove crocodiles if they get too close to people. It is not really people they are interested in: they eat wild pigs as they wander along riverbanks.

Monarto Zoo is a 1,000 hectare open-range sanctuary undertaking a major role nationally and internationally in breeding programs for rare and endangered species.
The Tasmanian tiger is extinct. It was hunted into extinction by Australian farmers who were losing livestock to the animal. Filmed and kept in captivity for a short time, authorities failed to instigate a breeding program. Thus, the species was lost for all time. Thylacinus cynocephalus was a mysterious animal. Very little was learned about its behavior before it died out.
It was like a large dog in size and stance. Indeed, it seems to have evolved as a marsupial dog to fulfill a niche in the environment. The Tasmanian Tiger emitted a muffled bark. When hunting they gave a sharper double bark repeated every few seconds. Though filmed, no sound recording of it exists.

Australian animals lived an unpressured existance on this isolated continent for millions of years. These same Australian animals have had to compete with an intruder, Man, for 40 million years. This they endured until Europeans came. Then they had introduced animals to contend with as well as Man. These new animals competed for habitat, food and shelter. Over time, this country's native plants, waterways and soil have been depleted. Study of Australia's native animals is important. It gives us an understanding of how the past has affected the present state of animal populations. It can clearly be seen how evolution has created such unique species. These special Australian animals must be protected and conserved. Injured and sick animals need to be cared for at wildlife centers. Animals Australia is an organization that brings together the resources of 40 animal welfare organizations to carry out this task. The Australian Koala foundation works alongside Animal Australia to protect the koala, an animal who's habitat has been reduced by human encroachment. The koala is not a bear. Wildlife Warrior Worldwide is the group originally formed by Steve Irwin to conserve native wildlife. This organization is supported by Terri Irwin and Australia Zoo.
